Changing Lives Through Horses
A BHS approved alternative provison
🌟 WHAT IS CHANGING LIVES THROUGH HORSES?
Changing Lives Through Horses is a BHS programme that uses horses, equestrian activities and the outdoor environment to help young people develop confidence, resilience, life skills and a positive attitude towards learning.
It is particularly valuable for individuals who may find mainstream education challenging or who need a different approach to learning.
As an Alternative Provision setting, we provide a supportive, practical and engaging environment where learning doesn't have to happen behind a desk.
Instead, young people can learn through horses.

💚 DEVELOPING SKILLS FOR LIFE
Working with horses provides countless opportunities to develop important personal, social and emotional skills.
Participants can work on:
✨ Confidence and self-esteem
✨ Communication
✨ Building trust and positive relationships
✨ Emotional awareness and regulation
✨ Resilience
✨ Motivation and engagement
✨ Responsibility
✨ Independence
✨ Teamwork
✨ Problem-solving
✨ Organisation
✨ Following instructions
✨ Understanding boundaries
✨ Managing challenges and setbacks
✨ Developing a positive attitude towards learning
For some young people, traditional classroom-based education simply isn't the environment in which they thrive.
Alternative Provision can provide another route — a chance to learn in a way that is practical, meaningful and engaging, while still developing valuable skills and working towards individual goals.
🐎 WHY HORSES?
Horses are incredibly perceptive animals. They respond to our behaviour, body language and communication, encouraging us to become more aware of ourselves and those around us.
Building a relationship with a horse takes patience, consistency, trust, respect and communication.
Young people can experience the reward of seeing a horse respond to their actions and communication — helping them recognise their own abilities and build confidence.
There is also a huge sense of achievement in learning how to safely care for, handle and work with such a large and powerful animal.
The horse becomes the teacher. ❤️
🌱 LEARNING AT THEIR OWN PACE
Our aim is to create a safe, welcoming and supportive environment where every participant is recognised as an individual.
Changing Lives Through Horses isn't simply about teaching someone to ride.
It's about using horses as a way to engage, educate, empower and inspire.
Participants can work towards personal goals and develop skills that can support them not only within the programme, but also in their education, relationships, future employment and everyday lives.
Whether someone needs help rebuilding their confidence, struggles with engagement in mainstream education, benefits from practical learning, or simply needs an environment where they can experience success, our Alternative Provision aims to provide a positive pathway forward.
🌈 Different doesn't mean less. Sometimes it means finding a different way to learn.
We are incredibly proud to be a BHS Changing Lives Through Horses Centre and to be able to offer this type of Alternative Provision from our yard.
